Sacred Rhythms
I am a fan of Ruth Haley Barton, a Christian author/speaker who encourages leaders to pay attention to the rhythms of our lives to be sure we are intentional about rest as an important, life giving concept in our daily existence. Of course, this is also biblical, a command from God actually, to incorporate Sabbath into our daily lives.
Sabbath is defined differently by Christians as they interpret scripture and fit this into their contexts. I am not advocating for a theological debate about how we observe the Sabbath, but what I do know is that Sabbath is very much a gift from God, and a concept that leads to a life of flourishing.
In school contexts’, we have different Sabbaths. One of those that we just experienced is a Spring Break, when many of us get to take a break from the daily and weekly grind of doing school. Whether it's as a student, as a teacher/employee, or as a parent; we all were able to “get away” for a week so that our hearts and minds could rest.
Part of this rest is, of course, to help us prepare for what is to come. And again, in a school context, it is time to rev-up for the end of a very busy school year. There are so many classroom activities, athletic events, music performances, and student learning showcases happening that it's almost exhausting to list them all. And yet, it's exciting, it represents the vitality of our school, and we want to be a part of it! We encourage everyone to come to as many events as you possibly can!
One of these events is coming soon is our preschool through 12th grade Open House which is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 at 10-11:30am. Pay attention to the invite in the Courier this week with more details coming to your inbox soon!
In a recent Podcast, Ruth Haley Barton suggests that spiritual and practical rest actually allows us to have clarity in our lives to be able to be the best version of ourselves. “If we sit still long enough, the sentiment in our souls will begin to settle”. And in order to take a good journey, we need to know who we are and where we are headed - with our souls settled.
Spring Break was an amazing experience of rest…and I am excited for what the future holds, both towards the end of this year, and for what God has in store for CCCS next year and beyond.
